Apple’s HomeKit is getting two new iPhone-powered features for LG’s upcoming smart home line — Proximity Control and tap-to-pair-before-power, and both are baked into iOS 27.2 beta code, per leaker pdfu. Neither feature requires the accessory to be powered on or connected to Wi-Fi first. Both rely on NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy, and both are exclusive to HomeKit, not standard Matter pairing. Even though iOS 27 supports Matter NFC commissioning out of the box. LG replaces the default Matter NFC applet in its secure element with a HomeKit-specific one. The accessories include a thermostat, temperature sensor, deadbolt lock, wired video doorbell, and multiple security cameras. Bloomberg confirmed Apple co-developed them. They’re branded LG but built for Apple’s ecosystem. They’re not launching Tuesday at Apple’s October 13 “Welcome home” event, the event will preview them, but Bloomberg says release is still “at least a few months away.” No pricing or regional availability has been disclosed. The Proximity Control feature triggers a Dynamic Island prompt on supported iPhones. “Open Controls” for thermostats, live camera view for doorbells and cams. On devices without a Dynamic Island, or on iPads. It shows a 30-second notification instead. Users can disable it in the Home app after setup. The setting currently reads: “Show controls when you bring your iPhone near your [accessory].” That wording matches the “Ask to Launch” option that replaced earlier iOS 27.0 variants offering “Never” or “Launch Automatically.” The tap-to-pair feature stores iPhone identity and network credentials directly into the accessory’s NXP SE051H secure element via NFC. Once powered, the device joins Wi-Fi or Thread, and a home hub finishes Matter setup. This means users won’t need to wait for the thermostat or lock to boot up before starting configuration. It also means Apple Store staff, or anyone helping set up a new home. Can pre-provision devices on-site, even before wiring or power is live. The feature is still in active development across iOS betas, so final behavior may shift before public release. Apple Support pages haven’t yet been updated to reflect either capability. Apple Pay isn’t involved. Neither is Siri. This is about Home app integration, NFC handoff, and proximity-triggered UI, no payment, no voice, no cloud processing required. LG’s firmware and iOS 27.2 are aligned on this. What ships first? The HomePod mini refresh, Apple TV 4K update, and new home hub on October 13. LG’s accessories follow later.
iPhone Proximity Control and Tap-to-Pair Before Power Coming to LG Home Accessories
Two new HomeKit features—Proximity Control and tap-to-pair-before-power—are coded into iOS 27.2 and tied to LG’s upcoming Apple-co-developed accessories. Neither requires power. Neither uses Matter NFC. Both are HomeKit-only.
