Microsoft and Nvidia used a joint showcase in San Francisco to push Windows computing directly into autonomous territory. Rather than leaning entirely on remote servers, the companies revealed an architecture built around Nvidia's RTX Spark processor, pairing Grace CPU cores with Blackwell graphics to run AI agents locally on personal computers.
The shift puts local model execution right inside Windows 11. Microsoft Copilot is expanding past browser sidebars into the operating system itself, capable of scanning personal directories, archiving tax forms, and drafting emails for user sign-off. To keep autonomous software from running wild across a machine, Microsoft showed off Execution Containers. These are OS-level sandboxes that restrict what local agents can read and write, paired with system logs that require each agent to attribute its actions.
The Windows Taskbar is getting an overhaul alongside the chip. Natural language inputs inside the search box can now trigger system adjustments, rearrange open windows, or take screen captures. When a task demands heavier lifting, the search interface hands requests over to Copilot. Developers will also get HydraFusion, a runtime rolling out October 15 across GitHub Copilot and VS Code that balances remote workloads against local models like Nvidia's Nemotron to protect token limits.
Machines running the architecture begin shipping October 16. Microsoft's flagship Surface Laptop Ultra leads the pack, joined by partner hardware from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 with an 18-core CPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Configurations top out at $5,899.99 for a 20-core Grace CPU, 1TB of storage, and 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory shared dynamically across computing cores.
Nvidia claimed the platform generates initial tokens 2.1 times faster and produces images 4.3 times faster than Apple's M5 Pro in a MacBook Pro. Those figures come entirely from Nvidia's stage presentation, so independent verification will have to wait for hardware in the wild.
The 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra weighs 4.5 pounds, measures under 18mm thick, and hits 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness on its mini-LED display. Microsoft also introduced a magnetic USB-C charging connector that breaks away when snagged. Beyond developer tasks, the company demonstrated Gears of War: E-Day running at 60 frames per second, with Call of Duty promised for RTX Spark in 2027. Preorders are open now, while enterprise developers can grab the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box starting at $5,999.
