Sony's PlayStation 5 is now booting software from its oldest rival. Community developers working on jailbroken PS5 hardware have managed to run both Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles directly on the console, turning the machine into an improbable hub for classic Microsoft games.

The breakthrough relies on ports of established PC emulation software rather than tools written entirely from scratch. For Xbox 360 emulation, modders brought over Xenia, the open-source PC emulator. That port currently boots marquee Microsoft titles, with playable examples including Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. Compatibility remains an active target, and modders are expanding the roster as they optimize the code.

Original Xbox support arrived alongside it through an application dubbed XPSEmu. Early testing on jailbroken systems shows the software running early franchise staples, including Halo 2 and Forza.

Cloud Streaming and Legacy Discs

Direct hardware emulation is only part of what homebrew enthusiasts are loading onto compromised hardware. The jailbreak also opens the PS5 to Xbox Cloud Gaming, giving players access to modern Microsoft releases over streaming. Through that workaround, players have even run Gears of War: E-Day on Sony hardware without owning an Xbox Series X or a capable gaming PC.

The same homebrew ecosystem is also chewing through Sony's own back catalogue. While official PS5 backwards compatibility stops at the PlayStation 4, jailbroken systems have run physical PlayStation 2 discs directly from the console's disc drive. Work is also underway to get PlayStation 3 games functioning through homebrew software.

None of this is approved by Sony, of course. Running custom emulators requires exploiting vulnerable PS5 firmware versions, which locks consoles out of the PlayStation Network and prevents them from updating to modern system software. Taking a console online with modified software usually ends in an immediate hardware ban.

Still, the rapid pace of the releases shows just how quickly modders are adapting PC gaming tools to the PS5's AMD architecture. With Xenia and XPSEmu now functional on hacked consoles, the developers behind the ports are turning their attention toward broader compatibility lists and frame rate stability across both console generations.
