OLED iPad Mini 60Hz Display: Not a Dealbreaker for Travel, Says What Hi-Fi

What Hi-Fi's Lewis Empson argues the lack of ProMotion is a non-issue for movie watching on planes and trains, even as Reddit debates rage.

Apple's new OLED iPad Mini has everything a traveling media junkie could want — Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, a redesigned speaker system, and peak brightness more than double the previous model. It also has a 60Hz display. No ProMotion. No variable refresh rate.

Just the same 60Hz panel Apple has used for years.

The omission has set off a round of outrage on Reddit and enthusiast forums. Some users call the tablet a non-starter. Others claim Apple is artificially capping a 120Hz-capable panel via software, though no evidence has surfaced to support that theory.

What Hi-Fi senior writer Lewis Empson, who spends weeks each year on long-haul flights and five-hour train rides to Cornwall, says the fury misses the point.

He's been carrying an 11-inch iPad Air M1 for three years, watching entire seasons of The Day of the Jackal and The Pitt on it. The M4 Air would be a fine upgrade, but he doesn't need an M5 chip or Pro pricing. The Mini gives him the OLED contrast and brightness jump he wants without the features he doesn't.

“Once I find my streaming service of choice and hit play, that 60Hz limit won't phase me,” Empson writes.

“I'll just be enjoying the inherent benefits of OLED instead.”

He acknowledges the friction: switching from a 120Hz iPhone 17 Pro to a 60Hz iPad feels like a step back for scrolling and gaming. But for his primary use case, watching movies and TV shows at 30,000 feet, the OLED black levels and Dolby Atmos speaker upgrade outweigh the refresh-rate deficit.

Empson wasn't surprised by the 60Hz spec.

He knows how Apple works. The company has kept ProMotion exclusive to its Pro-tier iPads, iPhones and Macs. The standard iPhone 17 finally got the feature, raising hopes that the Mini would follow. It didn't.

Apple announced the Mini alongside a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen, signaling a broader OLED push across the lineup.

Empson's next wish: an OLED iPad Air. That conversation, he notes, is for another day.

Pricing and release details for the new Mini were not included in the What Hi-Fi report. Apple's prior announcement pegged availability for November 6.
