Sony will stop producing PlayStation 5 game discs by January 2028. The decision is final — no reversal, no extension, no exceptions for collector’s editions or regional markets. Physical PS5 games released before that date will still work, and existing discs will continue to run on all PS5 models. But after 2028, every new PS5 title will be digital-only. No disc trays. No plastic cases. No shelf space reserved for unopened copies. Just downloads, subscriptions, and cloud saves, unless you own a PS4 or earlier console with backward compatibility, which Sony hasn’t touched in this announcement. This isn’t speculation. It’s confirmed policy, backed by Sony’s CFO, who told investors the move stands regardless of public reaction. Shawn Layden, former head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, called it a strategic misstep. On The Expansion Pass podcast, he said physical media still represents “a super important 20%” of PlayStation’s core audience. Not in revenue, but in loyalty. His math: 82% of full-game units are already digital downloads. Physical software accounts for just 4% of Sony’s software revenue. So yes, the economics check out. But, Layden argued, that remaining 20% includes collectors who buy two copies of every release, one to play, one to preserve. Mirroring comic book fandom. They’re not marginal. They’re the people who pre-order at midnight, attend launch events, and keep PlayStation’s legacy tangible. He didn’t claim to know Sony’s internal spreadsheets, “I don’t know what the stressors were around that, or what the spreadsheet said”. But he did say ending discs turns buying a game into buying access. And access expires. Discs don’t. The shift doesn’t affect PS5 hardware sales, the console still ships with a disc drive. Nor does it change how PlayStation Store works today. But it locks in a timeline: January 2028 is the last day any new PS5 game can ship on disc. After that, even if a publisher wants to press one, Sony won’t support it. What happens next? Retailers like GameStop and Amazon will clear remaining PS5 disc inventory through 2027. Collectors are already pricing pre-2028 editions higher on secondary markets. And developers may start designing packaging, bonus content, and limited runs with that deadline in mind, treating physical PS5 releases as finite artifacts, not just another SKU. Sony has not announced plans to remove disc drives from future consoles. But the writing is on the disc sleeve: the era of the PlayStation game disc ends in 16 months.
