Google pitched Rambler as one of the standout software perks of the Pixel 11 lineup. Powered by Gemini, the keyboard feature parses raw, messy speech on the fly, scrubbing verbal pauses like "umm" and "like" while shaping spoken thoughts into coherent sentences with clean punctuation. But the feature remained cordoned off to Google's newest hardware.
That exclusivity did not hold for long.
An independent developer has released PixelBoard, an altered version of Google's Gboard that runs Rambler on other Android handsets. The modification does not ask users to root their phones or modify core system partitions. It lives as a standalone package hosted on GitHub, meaning it can sit directly alongside your existing, official Gboard installation without overwriting it.
Sideloading and Server Hurdles
Getting it running follows standard sideloading steps. Users pull the modified APK from GitHub, install it, toggle the keyboard on within Android's system input settings, and then turn on Rambler Dictation inside the keyboard preferences. From there, the input engine handles voice entry through the Gemini-assisted processing layer.
There are clear caveats to keep in mind before jumping over.
Because Rambler relies on Google's cloud-backed Gemini infrastructure rather than fully on-device processing, the modified app stays tethered to Google's servers. That architecture leaves the door open for Google to shut off access at any moment through a remote configuration tweak or an updated backend validation check. There is no guarantee the modification keeps working tomorrow.
Sideloading modded system software also comes with unavoidable trust decisions. While PixelBoard does not demand root privileges, keyboard apps handle sensitive keystrokes, personal messages, and passwords. Users trying third-party builds need to weigh that exposure against the novelty of Google's cleaned-up dictation pipeline.
For now, the installer remains live on GitHub for anyone curious enough to test Google's flagship speech processing on older hardware.
