Apple added the first-generation Apple TV 4K to its official vintage hardware list on Friday. The classification comes just days before the company is expected to refresh the streaming media lineup during its scheduled launch event.
Hardware that sits on Apple's vintage list has been out of sale for more than five years. The change matters directly if your living room still houses the box that came out back in 2017. While Apple and authorized providers still handle fixes for vintage gear, repair eligibility is no longer guaranteed. Every service request now depends on whether replacement parts remain in inventory. Once a device eventually slips into the obsolete category, Apple cuts off official repairs and hardware parts entirely.
A long run in the living room
The 2017 release represented Apple's initial jump into ultra-high-definition streaming, bringing 4K HDR output into the tvOS ecosystem for the first time. It stayed in active duty through multiple platform updates, outlasting many competing set-top boxes from the same generation. If your setup still relies on that original hardware and the fan or internal power supply fails, finding an authorized repair pathway will only get harder as component inventories run dry.
