Apple’s First Touchscreen MacBook Pro Is Confirmed in macOS 27.2 Beta Code

Bloomberg reports the device will feature an OLED display and weigh “less” than current 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. It may carry the ‘MacBook Ultra’ name, though Apple has not used that branding publicly. No official name, no specs beyond OLED and weight reduction, no pricing, no exact launch date.

But the timeline is tightening: Bloomberg says “as soon as this month”, while also noting a possible slip to November. This isn’t just about adding taps and swipes. MacOS 27 introduced pull-to-refresh for the first time. A gesture native to touch interfaces.

Sidecar now supports touch input from iPad to Mac, a subtle but critical shift in input hierarchy. And according to Bloomberg, tapping a menu bar control will trigger dynamic enlargement of nearby options, a behaviour designed for finger accuracy, not cursor precision. The implications are structural. A touchscreen MacBook Pro breaks a 19-year design orthodoxy.

It forces rethinking of window management, context menus, drag-and-drop, and even how macOS handles overlapping windows versus full-screen apps. Developers haven’t been asked to adapt yet. But they will be. What’s not confirmed: chip (M-series?

M4X? Something new?), RAM configurations, port layout, battery life, or whether Touch ID or Face ID makes a return. There’s no mention of stylus support, haptic feedback, or foldable form factors. None of those appear in the beta strings or reporting.

What is confirmed: Apple is shipping code that assumes a touchscreen exists. And it’s shipping it before the hardware ships, meaning the device is almost certainly finalised, tested, and in production. Next step: Apple’s October or November event. If it happens this month, expect it Thursday.
