Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro Finish Fades to Bright Red After Three Weeks

Early owners of Apple's Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are encountering unexpected cosmetic wear. Photographs shared by buyers show the handset's deep, dark finish lightening noticeably into a much brighter red just three weeks after unboxing.

One affected owner, posting on Reddit under the handle Low-Ad9343, documented the rapid shift with side-by-side images. He purchased the Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro on September 19. By October 9, the anodized aluminum along the edges had lost its rich tone, turning a lighter red shade across the frame.

The owner carried the phone into a local Apple Store for inspection. Retail staff members told him they needed to consult with an engineer and promised to follow up by Monday, October 12. It remains unknown whether Apple handled the incident as a covered hardware defect or agreed to swap the phone for a replacement.

Unverified Causes and Past Precedents

Online discussions have pointed toward several potential culprits, ranging from harsh chemical contact with hand lotions to direct heat or ultraviolet light exposure. None of those explanations have been confirmed. Apple has not released a statement regarding any widespread manufacturing defect, and the total number of hardware units displaying the color shift is still unclear.

This is not the first time recent Apple flagships have run into surface trouble. Similar discoloration complaints cropped up last year around the Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro models. The darker finishes on the current generation are already known for maintenance headaches. Both the Burgundy and Black iPhone 18 Pro builds gather stubborn dust around their rear camera housings that proves difficult to wipe away without risking micro-scratches on the protective lens glass.

What sets this latest report apart is that the color change appears irreversible. Rather than simple oil build-up from everyday handling, the aluminum itself seems to be losing its pigment.

Whether Apple treats the fading as normal cosmetic wear or an anodizing failure under standard warranty terms will determine how many affected buyers can secure a swap. More owners are likely to monitor their phones closely as the hardware logs its first full month in pockets and cases.
