The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are the same phone in two sizes. That is the headline from GSMArena's lab comparison published Thursday, and it holds across almost every metric the outlet tested. Same A20 Pro chip on TSMC's 2nm node. Same 12GB of RAM.
Same 256GB base storage scaling to 2TB. Same four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, Burgundy. Same variable-aperture 48MP main camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor. Same 100mm 4x telephoto.
Same 48MP ultrawide. Same 18MP selfie camera. Same IP rating. Same display technology.
The only hardware differences are the screen diagonal, the battery capacity and the cooling solution inside. Everything else is shared silicon and glass. GSMArena tested physical-SIM models with 4,056 mAh in the Pro and 5,391 mAh in the Pro Max. The eSIM-only variants widen the gap slightly to 4,288 mAh versus 5,567 mAh.
In every battery scenario the Max lasted longer. The biggest leads showed up in web browsing and 4G voice calls. Charging tells a similar story. The Pro Max pulls ahead in the first 15 and 30 minutes — 12 and 13 percentage points faster respectively, and finishes a full cycle about seven minutes sooner.
After the halfway mark the curves converge. Sound favors the larger chassis. Bigger internal volumes act as larger echo chambers, so the Pro Max plays louder with slightly more prominent bass. Performance in synthetic benchmarks is statistically identical.
Where the Max pulls away is sustained load. Its larger vapor chamber keeps clocks higher for longer under stress. The smaller Pro throttles earlier. Camera output is shot-for-shot identical.
Daylight, 2x crop, 4x telephoto, 8x hybrid, ultrawide, low-light 1x and 2x, GSMArena found no pattern of difference between the two models. Variation between individual shots mattered more than the model that took them. For buyers the decision collapses to three questions. Do you want a 6.3-inch or 6.9-inch screen?
Do you need the extra browsing and call time? Do you care about sustained GPU performance in heavy games? If the answer to all three is no, the smaller Pro saves $100 and 28 grams. The Pro Max starts at $1,199.
The Pro at $1,099. Both ship now.
