Claude code cracked the Echo Dot 3 — and turned it into a Home Assistant satellite. Not the 2019 or 2020 models. Not the clock version. Just the original 2018 Echo Dot 3, the one with the fabric-covered base and no display.
That’s the only model confirmed to work with the new open firmware from Andy’s Tech Labs, now live on GitHub as Echo Dot Assist.* It boots custom Linux, keeps local wake-word detection, and cuts all telemetry to Amazon.* No cloud dependency. No account. No voice data leaving the device.* The catch?
You need soldering gear and a USB-to-serial adapter. This isn’t a software toggle. It’s hardware-level re-flashing: expose the debug pins, wire in, flash the bootloader, then deploy the new OS.* XDA Developers reports the same method has already been used to root Samsung Tizen TVs, but this is the first public, reproducible Claude-assisted jailbreak of an Echo Dot.* The project page says variants exist for other Echo models, but warns setup differs and compatibility isn’t guaranteed.
