SteamOS is no longer strictly bound to dedicated gaming handhelds. An Android application called DroidDeck brings the full Linux-based gaming operating system to smartphones running Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, enabling direct installations of Steam titles and desktop programs without streaming from a separate computer.
The tool is still being actively developed, but early tests show that recent mobile silicon can manage demanding desktop software. In testing showcased by tech channel ETA Prime and reported by Notebookcheck, DroidDeck was installed on a Nubia RedMagic 11 Pro. Equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and built-in water cooling, the handset served as a test platform for local PC game translation on Android.
Real-World Gaming Benchmarks
In testing documented by ETA Prime, the Snapdragon hardware delivered playable frame rates across several major releases at 720p resolution.
Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 720p on medium graphic settings, reaching an average of 60 frames per second. While frame delivery was not entirely steady throughout the testing session, it showed that current flagship Qualcomm silicon packs enough processing muscle to translate modern PC releases into playable experiences.
Older catalog games showed even stronger results. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition hit a steady 60 fps at 720p on medium settings. Left 4 Dead 2, Valve's cooperative shooter from 2009, reached 120 fps at 720p with high visual presets enabled.
More recent releases produced varied results depending on engine demands. Ghost of Tsushima, a modern AAA port, averaged 48 fps at 720p on medium settings. Enabling FSR Frame Generation lifted the samurai action title up to 60 fps on the RedMagic device.
Emulation Limits and App Support
Not every title ran smoothly under the translation layer. Demanding modern releases still push the setup past its breaking point. Hogwarts Legacy struggled during testing, failing to hold even a steady 30 fps at 720p on medium presets. Notebookcheck noted that future hardware upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which promise substantial Adreno graphics gains, might eventually make such titles playable on phones.
DroidDeck is not restricted to Steam games alone. Because it runs a full SteamOS environment on top of Android, the application allows users to install general PC software. That includes demanding emulation tools like the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator. ETA Prime walked through the complete configuration process in the video, detailing available settings, custom performance profiles, and interface controls.
For mobile enthusiasts, DroidDeck highlights how close top-tier mobile processors have come to handling full desktop gaming libraries on local storage. Continued development will determine how many more titles reach stable performance as the project matures.
