Google’s Gemini 4 Argon and Anthropic’s Claude Code just ran head-to-head on a real, messy, production-side project — not a coding kata or a clean GitHub starter. The test: porting a 2015 Kindle Paperwhite into a live Home Assistant dashboard, with ancient browser constraints, Linux line-ending traps, and hixie-76 WebSocket support baked in.
No scaffolding. No hand-holding. Just one repo, one prompt, one hour, and two very different outcomes. Both agents shipped working proxies.
Only one shipped a dashboard that fit the screen without breaking core functionality. And only one wrote tests for failure modes the developer hadn’t even named aloud. That was Claude Code, running Opus 5.5 on the $100 Claude Max plan. Gemini 4 Argon, running in Antigravity on Google’s $20 AI Pro tier, delivered cleaner visual tweaks, wider columns, better icons, but broke layout on the actual Kindle, pushing critical cards off-screen.
It also wrote four tests. Claude Code wrote 63, including one verifying that a single missing calendar wouldn’t blank the entire forecast list. Both respected the ES5 + Linux line-ending trap. Neither touched the hidden landmine.
But when deployed to the physical device, Claude’s version preserved the original two-column grid and full sensor visibility. Argon’s shifted to one column and lost the Kitchen Humidity card and Office CO2 chart, the only graph on the dashboard. Argon used 18% of its weekly allowance in 28 minutes. Claude Code reported $5.33 in API-equivalent usage, though the plans aren’t directly comparable.
Neither caught the daylight-saving bug hiding in the clock code. Antigravity’s usage panel shows only percentages. Claude Code breaks usage down by model. The test wasn’t about who’s ‘smarter’.
It was about who ships something that works where it runs. For now, on this kind of embedded, constrained, legacy-targeted side project, Claude Code shipped closer to done. Gemini 4 Argon shipped closer to ‘needs another round’. Antigravity 2.0 is already live.
Claude Code is shipping updates through its desktop app and CLI. Both are available globally.
