Google has started pushing a sizable update to the Google Home app, and if you've spent the past year yelling at a speaker that refuses to set a timer, this one is aimed squarely at you.

The changelog, first detailed by 9to5Google, targets a long list of Gemini complaints. Transferring music between rooms, setting timers and controlling YouTube TV playback should now work more consistently, with fewer of the "sorry, I didn't understand" responses that Gemini has been known to throw even when nobody said anything at all.

It's a notable admission, even an implicit one, that the Gemini switchover inside Google Home has been rocky. Google folded its older Assistant-based voice controls into Gemini earlier this year, and the transition left plenty of households with smart speakers that misfired on basic requests. This update doesn't claim to fix everything, but it does target some of the most common frustrations head-on.

Cameras, Matter devices and speakers all get attention

Nest camera owners get a handful of fixes too. IOS users should see more reliable scrolling through event timelines, while Android gets a smoother live view on foldable phones. Wi-Fi connectivity and night vision switching have also been improved across Nest cameras, along with more accurate status light behavior on certain models.

Matter users, meanwhile, get better icons for windows, doors, garage doors, gates, blinds and cabinets on Android, replacing generic symbols with ones that actually match the device. Energy data shown for compatible Matter devices is getting more specific treatment as well.

There's also a new Home Premium benefits screen, cleaner online status indicators on iOS, faster-loading spaces on Android, and visual tweaks to the Thread settings screen and the parental controls page.

Alongside the app update, Google is pushing firmware updates to the Google TV Streamer, Nest Wi-Fi units, and Nest and Google Home speakers. On the speaker side specifically, the firmware brings improvements to streaming performance, audio quality, volume balancing between paired speakers, local network discovery, Bluetooth streaming, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility and Google Meet voice controls. Google says the firmware also includes unspecified security patches across its smart home hardware.

It adds up to one of the more comprehensive Google Home updates in recent memory, touching nearly every category of device the app controls. That said, TechRadar notes it hasn't resolved every issue users have reported with the Gemini-powered app, so don't expect every quirk to vanish overnight.

Google says the update is rolling out now and could take a few days to reach every device. It should arrive automatically, but anyone impatient can check manually. On Android, tap your profile picture in the Play Store, then Manage apps and devices. On iOS, tap your profile picture in the App Store, then App Updates.

For a smart home ecosystem that's had a bumpy year, this is at least a step toward the app working the way it's supposed to.
