Google Home App Update Fixes Nest Cameras, Speakers and Routers

The fortnightly Google Home release tackles silent alarms, disappearing speaker groups and Wi-Fi 7 drops, with older Nest hardware getting as much attention as Gemini.

Google has pushed out a new Google Home update, and for once the headline feature isn't Gemini. The fortnightly release, detailed in a changelog spotted by The Ambient on Friday, is mostly about cleaning up bugs that have piled up across Nest cameras, smart speakers, Wi-Fi routers and Chromecast hardware.

The most eye-catching fix deals with alarms and timers that could silently drop to zero volume. Google says affected devices will now match alarm and timer volume to the device's regular volume setting, which should stop people from sleeping through an alarm that technically went off. A related fix stops Gemini from accidentally changing the volume on the speaker you're talking to when you ask it to adjust volume in another room.

Older Nest hardware gets real attention here, too. First-generation Nest Cams see improvements to Wi-Fi reconnection and a fix for delayed night vision activation. Nest Hello, the original video doorbell, gets corrected audio sync, fewer unexpected restarts and better person and Familiar Face detection. Nest Wifi routers and points pick up improvements to mesh reliability and DNS fallback, and Chromecast with Google TV in both HD and 4K variants gets the August 2026 security patch along with streaming and connectivity fixes.

Speakers and Gemini both get smoother

Google Home and Nest speakers are getting smoother audio streaming, clearer sound at lower volumes and adjustments to bass that had been running heavy. Google is also fixing disappearing speaker groups, Wi-Fi 7 connection failures and Bluetooth playback that would pause without warning, three complaints that have shown up repeatedly from owners of multi-speaker setups.

On the Gemini for Home side, voice commands for moving music between rooms should now work more consistently, and Google says it has cut down on cases where the assistant responds with "Sorry, I did not understand" even when nobody said anything to it. Voice controls for YouTube TV on smart displays have also been refined.

The Google Home app itself picks up a handful of changes on Android. Matter-compatible devices like garage doors, gates and windows now show icons and controls suited to what they actually are, and Matter smart plugs and energy monitors can display real-time and cumulative power usage directly in the app. There's a new one-tap shortcut for switching a compatible thermostat to an energy-saving temperature when leaving home, and foldable Android phones get smoother camera live viewing when switching between folded and unfolded states.

Google has been pouring most of its public attention into Gemini for Home lately, including a redesign of its in-app assistant overlay and a recent fix for speakers that kept throwing false error messages. This update suggests the company hasn't lost interest in the basics. Nest cameras, Wifi routers and Chromecast boxes bought years ago are still getting worked on, and for the households that depend on them daily, that may matter more than another Gemini feature.
