Google is refreshing its mid-tier wearable catalog with the Fitbit Edge, an intermediate fitness tracker scheduled to ship on October 27.

Preorders are already underway. The hardware fills the middle slot in Google's lineup, sitting right between the screen-free Fitbit Air and the flagship Pixel Watch 5. That spot belonged to the Fitbit Charge 6 since late 2023. While the new tracker leans heavier on Pixel Watch visual styling, it drops at least one utility feature that defined its predecessor.

The most obvious physical change sits on the front. Google expanded the display area compared to earlier bands, packing in more screen space for watch faces and interface panels borrowed directly from Wear OS. Alongside that broader footprint, Google returned to a tactile physical button on the side of the chassis, abandoning the capacitive groove that frustrated users on the Charge 6.

Underneath the casing, the Edge handles standard fitness monitoring. It tracks heart rate, workout metrics, and sleep stages, with data funneling into the Google Health application. The tracker also supports live heart rate broadcasting to third-party gym equipment. Phone alerts and incoming call notices appear on the enlarged screen, and built-in GPS powers turn-by-turn routing through Google Maps without relying on a paired phone in your pocket.

Yet Google made an unexpected compromise on connectivity. The Edge omits Google Wallet, removing contactless wrist payments entirely. The Charge 6 offered tap-to-pay out of the box, so buyers upgrading from that generation will lose the ability to pay at checkout terminals.

On the hardware accessories side, Google stayed conservative. The Edge borrows the silicone Active Band appearance seen across modern Pixel devices, though it locks in place using the clasp connector design from the Charge family. It also shares a magnetic charging cable with the Fitbit Air, meaning both current-generation fitness bands can trade cords.

Full performance figures, real-world outdoor screen legibility, and battery stamina remain under wraps ahead of retail availability. Devices are slated to reach preorder customers when the Fitbit Edge hits shelves on October 27.
