Google is giving the vehicle version of its app store an overhaul. The company announced a redesigned Google Play experience for vehicles with Google built-in, updating how drivers browse, compare and install software directly onto dashboard touchscreens.

The refreshed storefront will adjust its layout across different display dimensions and shapes over the coming weeks. Updates will install automatically on supported vehicles. Unlike standard Android Auto, systems running Google built-in do not rely on a tethered smartphone, operating native software like Google Maps and Gemini straight from the car computer.

cleanly video switching and new downloads

The most practical tweak in the update targets YouTube playback. Drivers waiting in parking lots can stream video on the vehicle console, but the feed usually cuts off the moment the vehicle shifts out of park. With the new parked-to-drive feature, the screen cuts the picture to satisfy road safety rules while audio continues playing in the background over the vehicle speakers without interruption. The background listening option does require an active YouTube Premium subscription.

Several new third-party titles are also arriving on the platform. The catalog, which already holds more than 700 car-ready apps, is adding video streaming from STARZ and JioHotstar, web browsing via Firefox, and casual gaming through Ludo King. These multimedia titles stay locked to parked sessions.

Broader automaker rollout

Google built-in currently runs across more than 100 vehicle models sold by 16 carmakers. Google stated that it is collaborating on in-car audio and media systems with brands including Volvo, Polestar, Honda, Mazda and BYD.

General Motors vehicles will receive the revamped storefront as well, including upcoming trucks like the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 with their expansive center infotainment displays. Media partners working with Google on future car entertainment integrations include Audible, SiriusXM, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn, Gaana and The Post.

Eligible cars will pick up the revised interface automatically as the rollout expands globally in the coming weeks.
