iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Don't Make the Wrong Choice! · 9to5Mac on YouTube

IPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. IPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Both are shipping now — but only the Pro Max is reliably in stock in the US and India. The Duo’s wait times stretch into early 2027, per Tom’s Guide, with carriers and online retailers citing backlogs that won’t clear before year-end.

Apple hasn’t announced a formal India launch date or pricing for either model, but T-Mobile’s US trade-in deals, up to $1,000 off the Pro Max, $1,200 off the Duo, are live as of Friday morning. That puts the Pro Max from $299 after trade-in. The Duo from $799. Neither price includes tax or carrier plan fees.

No official Indian pricing has been confirmed, though importers are already listing the Duo at ₹1.89 lakh (roughly $2,275) on e-commerce portals, a premium over the Pro Max’s expected ₹1.49 lakh launch tag. The Pro Max is available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. So is the Duo, but its top-tier 2TB model costs $3,199 in the US, £3,199 in the UK, AU$5,899 in Australia.

That’s $700 more than the Pro Max’s 2TB tier. Both run the A20 Pro chip. Both have IP68 ratings. Both use Ceramic Shield 2 on their outer displays.

But they diverge sharply beyond that. The Pro Max is a 6.9-inch slab: 163.4 × 78 × 8.8 mm, 249g, with Face ID, a Dynamic Island, and three 48MP lenses, main, ultrawide, and telephoto with 4x optical zoom. The Duo folds: 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm closed, 117.8 × 164.6 × 5.2 mm open, 254g (Tom’s Guide says 154g, likely a typo. 8.96 oz = ~254g).

It has two cameras: 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide. No telephoto. No variable aperture. The inner display is 7.6 inches, 4:3 aspect ratio, nano-texture matte, less vibrant, less reflective.

The outer screen is 5.4 inches, hole-punch front camera. Under-display camera on the inner panel. ESIM-only worldwide. No physical SIM option, unlike the Pro Max, which retains physical SIM support outside North America.

Brightness? Duo wins: 2,558 nits peak. Pro Max hits 2,326. But the Pro Max’s telephoto lens, variable aperture, and deeper shadow detail in low light give it an edge in real-world photo consistency, per Tom’s Guide’s 10-round camera test.

Selfies and ultrawides are near-identical. Main-camera shots show stronger contrast and better shadow recovery on the Pro Max. So who’s buying what? Early adopters and foldable-curious buyers are lining up for the Duo, but they’re waiting.

Most buyers in the US and India will get the Pro Max first, and likely keep it longer. Its battery life, thermal management, and software maturity are untested in the Duo’s form factor. And while the Duo’s price anchors Apple firmly in the ultra-premium tier, the Pro Max remains the default flagship, cheaper, proven, and available now.

Pre-orders for the Duo opened October 25. Shipments began November 1. But Tom’s Guide says delivery windows are slipping. The next major update?

IOS 18.4, due December 9, the first to add native multitasking gestures for the Duo’s unfolded screen. Until then, the Pro Max ships with full iOS 18.3 support. And it’s the only iPhone you can walk into a Reliance Digital or Best Buy and take home today.
