iPhone Duo forces full wipe to change text and icon size

Apple locked Display Zoom to the first-time setup screen—and won’t let you change it without wiping the entire phone.

IPhone Duo owners can’t change Display Zoom after setup — only a full wipe brings the option back. Apple has locked the Appearance setting to the initial configuration screen, and iOS 27.2 still doesn’t restore it later in Settings. That means switching from Default to Large text, or vice versa, requires erasing all data, reinstalling apps, and reconfiguring everything from scratch.

No toggle. No hidden menu. No workaround. Just a factory reset.

The restriction applies only to the iPhone Duo. Every other iPhone lets users adjust scaling anytime under Settings > Display & Brightness > View. On the Duo, that menu is gone once setup finishes. Reddit users flagged the issue first.

MacObserver and MacRumors confirmed it. One user, u/earthdog, contacted Apple Support directly: a senior advisor verified there’s no current path to change it post-setup. Apple hasn’t responded publicly to media inquiries about whether this is intentional or a bug, or whether it’ll be fixed. For early adopters who picked Medium thinking they’d prefer larger icons later, or those who bought the Duo for its dual-screen flexibility but now want tighter layout density, the limitation cuts deep.

It’s not just aesthetics. It’s accessibility, readability, and how much of the interface fits on each panel when folded or unfolded. The iPhone Duo launched globally with iOS 27.1. IOS 27.2 rolled out last week.

Neither version restores the setting. Apple’s next major update, iOS 27.3, is due in December, but no roadmap or developer beta notes mention Display Zoom restoration. So for now: choose carefully during setup. Because changing your mind costs you everything.
