Microsoft has resolved a persistent bug that trapped Windows 11 users in black screens right after signing in. The fix arrived on Tuesday as part of the company's October 13 cumulative updates, putting an end to desktop loading failures and Windows Explorer crashes that had plagued machines since August.
The problem hit virtual environments hardest. According to Microsoft's release health dashboard, the flaw specifically targeted Azure Virtual Desktop hosts running FSLogix, the tool organizations deploy to speed up user profile handling across pooled virtual machines. When affected users tried logging into their sessions, the desktop environment failed to launch automatically, leaving them staring at empty dark displays while event logs filled with Explorer crash notices.
IT staff stuck without the new patch can still pull users through manually by firing up Windows Explorer via Task Manager for each active session. That workaround merely band-aids the symptom until a full reboot brings the problem right back.
For managed enterprise machines, Microsoft previously offered a Known Issue Rollback executed through Group Policy. Those rollback packages cover Windows 11 version 26H1, version 25H2, and version 24H2. Systems on 24H2 and 25H2 relied on a policy tied to update KB5124010, which earlier gained notoriety for triggering crashes in games that use Dolby Digital sound output. Administrators deploying the rollback group policy still need to reboot target endpoints before the fix takes effect.
Now, Microsoft says the workaround and rollback policies are no longer required if endpoints have the October 13 cumulative update or any newer build installed.
Alongside the desktop fix, the Tuesday patch tackled broken Always On VPN connections introduced during September's security update round. Another headache remains on the loose, though. Microsoft has acknowledged a separate issue where recent updates break Remote Desktop sessions for non-administrator accounts whenever the Administrator protection feature is active. The company has not packaged a resolution for that remote desktop bug into this week's release.
Standard Windows Update channels are distributing the cumulative patch now across consumer and business builds, including Windows 11 Pro editions tied to domain and enterprise management tools.
