Nintendo Switch 2 will keep physical Game Cards for the life of the console generation — no disc-like phaseout planned. Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s VP and general manager for Latin America, confirmed it outright in an interview with Brazilian YouTuber Coelho no Japão: “There’s no plans to ditch physical.” The statement lands just as Sony’s January 2028 discontinuation of PlayStation discs sparks industry-wide debate.
Nintendo isn’t following suit. Not even close. It’s not lip service either: the Switch 2 launched barely over a year ago, and its hardware still includes full physical media support, unlike Sony’s upcoming all-digital PS5 Pro revision or Microsoft’s rumored Project Helix discless design. Van Zyll framed the decision around user preference, not tech inevitability.
He called Nintendo “historically very agnostic” on format. Meaning it follows demand, not dogma. And demand, especially in Latin America, is firmly physical. “It’s a collectibility.

Physical cartridges that unlock digital downloads, aren’t just placeholders. They’re tradeable, lendable, resellable. Unlike static download codes, they behave like legacy cartridges in the digital age. Nintendo hasn’t announced any shift away from them.
That matters for buyers now. If you’re choosing between a Switch 2 and a PlayStation 5 Pro launching in late 2026, physical game libraries, resale value, and shelf presence aren’t abstract concerns. They’re baked into the hardware choice. For collectors, parents buying secondhand, or gamers in regions where broadband is spotty or expensive, the cartridge stays relevant.
Microsoft remains the wild card. Xbox fans lean heavily digital, thanks to Game Pass. But rumors persist that Project Helix may retain discs to appease core users. Nintendo, meanwhile, isn’t hedging.
Its stance is clear, regional, and hardware-locked: physical isn’t fading. It’s built in. Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cards remain available globally. No price change or discontinuation notice has been issued.
