The PlayStation 5 Pro is officially out of stock on Sony’s US website — and selling for $1,100+ on auction sites, as demand surges ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s November 19 launch. The $900 console, launched at $700 in November 2024, has been hit by what Sony called ‘temporary market supply constraints and high demand’ in a September advisory to distributors. That shortage is now stretching into 2027, per the same notice. GTA 6 isn’t the sole driver: Wolverine, the PS5-exclusive action title from Insomniac Games, has moved 2.16 million copies since September. But Rockstar’s blockbuster is the catalyst. It’s confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro only, with no other platforms announced. And while it runs on the base PS5, its visual fidelity and performance scaling are reportedly tuned for the Pro’s upgraded GPU and enhanced 4K processing pipeline. The bottleneck isn’t software. It’s silicon: a global shortage of memory and storage chips, dubbed ‘RAMageddon’. Driven by AI infrastructure demand. China’s YMTC has raised memory chip prices and shifted production toward higher-margin products, with shortages expected to persist until 2029. Meanwhile, GameStop and other retailers are listing used PS5 Pro units at 66% over MSRP, meaning $1,494 for a console that launched at $700 and now retails at $900. Sony has not commented publicly on the pricing surge or the extended shortage timeline. GTA 6 preorders remain open at $80. The game launches November 19. The PS5 Pro remains unavailable direct from Sony in the US. And no restock date has been announced.
