Samsung's latest clamshell asks buyers to pay more money for an experience that looks very familiar on paper. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 arrived in stores on August 7, carrying a starting price of $1,199.99 in the United States for the 256GB version. That represents a $100 jump over the launch price of last year's Galaxy Z Flip 7, which debuted at $1,099.
Buyers stepping up to 512GB face an even wider gap. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 costs $1,399.99 for that tier, whereas the Flip 7 launched at $1,219. In the UK, the newer handset starts at £1,149, while Australian pricing sits at AU$1,949. Component pressures and broader inflation contributed to the price bump, but the higher price tag puts a harsh spotlight on how little the hardware has shifted.
Slimmer Frame and Hinge Tweaks
The physical dimensions show where Samsung spent its engineering effort. At 180g, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 sheds 8g from the Flip 7. Unfolded, the new phone measures 6.1mm thick compared to the older model's 6.5mm profile. Folded shut, thickness drops from 13.7mm down to 13.1mm.
A revised Armor FlexHinge mechanism accounts for much of the tactile difference. Samsung widened the inner edges to give thumbs better purchase and reduced internal friction, making one-handed openings less clumsy. Yet the aesthetic profile remains basically intact, wrapped around the same flat-sided frame.
Look past the chassis and the core hardware stays put. Both foldables feature identical display specs: a 6.9-inch 1080x2520 AMOLED inner screen with an adaptive refresh rate spanning 1Hz to 120Hz, paired with a 4.1-inch 948x1048 cover screen outside. Peak brightness reaches 2,600 nits on both models.
Silicon Splits and Video Software
Camera hardware tells the same story. Each model packs a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP front camera, skipping a dedicated telephoto shooter entirely. Rather than changing glass or sensors, Samsung leaned into software tweaks on the Z Flip 8. A Camcorder Grip mode rearranges record and zoom buttons when gripping the handset sideways, while Super Steady's Horizontal Lock holds video straight through deliberate phone tilt.
The real operational divide lies under the hood. While every Galaxy Z Flip 7 shipped globally with Samsung's Exynos 2500, the Z Flip 8 introduces a regional split. American and Australian buyers receive Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. UK models switch to the in-house Exynos 2600 instead.
Both chipsets give the Flip 8 extra overhead for heavy multitasking, gaming, and local AI processing. Whether that extra speed justifies the higher barrier to entry is another matter. Retailers are preparing to clear remaining Galaxy Z Flip 7 inventory, leaving the older handset poised for aggressive markdowns as seasonal holiday promotions approach.
