Apple Limits New Siri Remote Precision Finding to Recent iPhones

Owners of the iPhone 15 and 16 lines will miss out on directional tracking for the redesigned TV controller.

If you lose your television controller beneath the couch cushions, Apple's latest remote can help you track it down. Just make sure you upgraded your handset this autumn first.

The refreshed Siri Remote, revealed alongside the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, introduces directional Precision Finding and an integrated speaker designed to chime when summoned through Find My. Yet despite packing hardware built for close-range location searches, the directional tracking tool will not work with the iPhone 15 lineup or the iPhone 16 generation.

That limitation comes straight from Apple's documentation footnotes. Directional guidance demands an iPhone Duo, an iPhone Air, or an iPhone 17 or newer model, while explicitly cutting out the budget iPhone 17e. Handsets must also run the current iOS release, and regional availability varies.

The Ultra Wideband Gap

The cutoff is an unusual technical split. Both the iPhone 15 family and standard iPhone 16 units carry Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband silicon. Those exact phones communicate happily with the AirTag 2 over long ranges, pointing users straight toward lost keys or backpacks with directional arrows.

Why that exact same radio setup fails to qualify for the new Siri Remote remains unexplained. Apple has offered no technical justification for gating the controller's directional tracking to the newest hardware tiers.

People holding older handsets will not be completely stranded. The proximity tracking tool introduced back in iOS 17 still functions on second-generation and later remotes. That interface relies on expanding and contracting rings to signal whether you are wandering closer to or farther away from the target, acting like an automated game of hot and cold.

What those older phones cannot summon is the on-screen arrow that guides you to an exact patch of carpet. The remote's physical speaker, however, is a direct hardware feature of this fourth-generation remote, letting users trigger an audible chime to locate it by ear.

Standalone Remote Pricing and Rollout

Existing Apple TV owners will not have to swallow the entire cost of a set-top box refresh to get the updated wand. Apple plans to sell the fourth-generation Siri Remote as an individual accessory, and it backward-pairs with the aging Apple TV HD along with every release of the Apple TV 4K.

That makes it an easy path for living rooms that merely want the built-in beeper and better casing without buying the $299 fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. Preorders for that media box opened on October 13, and shipments start hitting doorsteps on November 13.
