Apple used the announcement of its fourth-generation Apple TV 4K to confirm something owners of older boxes will care about more than the new hardware: Siri AI is coming to them too, for free.
The new Apple TV 4K costs $299 in the US, £299 in the UK and AU$449 in Australia, and starts shipping November 13, 2026. It gets a faster processor and can now anchor a surround setup using four HomePod 2 or HomePod mini 2 speakers. But Apple's release notes make clear the real story isn't limited to buyers of the new box.
"Siri AI is available as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), and is available at launch in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK in English," the company says in its release documentation. That covers the 2nd generation box that shipped in 2021 and the 3rd generation that followed in 2022, alongside the brand-new model.
Siri AI is Apple's reworked assistant, built to pull in broader knowledge and personal context rather than just answering narrow commands. On the Apple TV, that's supposed to mean things like recalling an album a friend mentioned weeks ago or picking up a show exactly where a family member left off, based on what the assistant already knows about your accounts and history. Apple hasn't said the feature set will be trimmed down for the older, less powerful boxes, though response times could run a little slower on hardware that's four or five years old by the time the update lands.
Apple hasn't given a firm date for when the tvOS 27.2 update carrying Siri AI will reach those earlier boxes, only that it's coming as a beta. Given that the new Apple TV 4K ships with the feature baked in from day one, the rollout to the 2nd and 3rd generation models is likely to follow close behind, though Apple has yet to confirm a timeline.
Alongside the software, Apple is also selling an updated Siri Remote for $59, available to order now through Apple and listed on Amazon.com at the same price. It adds a built-in speaker that chirps when you're hunting for it under couch cushions, and ultra-wideband hardware that enables Precision Finding, giving a compatible iPhone exact directions to the remote's location. Unlike Siri AI, the new remote isn't tied to the new box: Apple says it works with previous-generation Apple TV models as well.
Taken together, the two updates mean households that skipped the new $299 box can still get most of what makes it interesting. The processor bump and multi-speaker surround support stay exclusive to the 4th generation hardware, but the assistant doing the heavy lifting arrives on boxes already sitting under millions of televisions. What's left is a release date for tvOS 27.2 itself, which Apple has not yet announced.
