Apple is preparing to refresh its living-room hardware on Tuesday, October 13, breaking a four-year gap since the streaming box last saw an update. The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K will arrive alongside the company's "Welcome home" showcase in New York, which kicks off at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Rather than hosting an elaborate stage presentation, Apple plans to reveal the hardware through an online press release before demonstrating it to invited press and creators in person.
The hardware upgrade inside the box is substantial. Rumors indicate the upcoming model runs on either an A19 or an A19 Pro processor, paired with 8GB to 12GB of RAM. That is a massive jump from the current model released in October 2022, which runs on an older A15 Bionic silicon platform with just 4GB of RAM. The expanded memory buffer is intended to give the box enough headroom to power Apple's local Siri AI features right on the television screen.
Faster Radios and a Tweaked Remote
Wireless networking gets a similar overhaul. The new console is expected to incorporate Apple's in-house N1 wireless chip, introducing support for both Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. The 2022 edition topped out at Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. When paired with compatible Wi-Fi 7 home routers, the N1 chip should deliver noticeably lower network latency and faster local transfer rates for high-bitrate video streams.
