Sony has pushed PS5 system software version 26.07-14.22.00 to all consoles. It landed Saturday, November 2 — four days before GTA 6’s global release on November 6. The update is 1.267 GB. Its official changelog reads exactly: We’ve made some security fixes to the system software. No features.
No bug fixes called out. No performance notes. Just that line, and timing that’s impossible to ignore. So far, Rockstar has not confirmed any firmware requirement for GTA 6.
But multiple gaming forums and jailbreak trackers now list 14.22 as the minimum required version to launch the game. That’s not an official spec. It’s a working assumption drawn from early retail disc checks and internal build logs circulating in homebrew circles. This follows firmware 14.20, released October 21, just weeks after a public jailbreak for versions up to 13.60 went live.
That exploit allowed full kernel access, custom firmware installation, and unsigned code execution. Sony’s last two updates have been purely defensive. And now, with GTA 6’s launch window narrowing, the pressure is visible: every patch since mid-October has been smaller, faster, and narrower in scope, all security, no fluff. Why it matters: GTA 6 is the most anticipated console release in years.
It launches day-one on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, no PC version until 2027. Piracy risk is high. A jailbroken PS5 running older firmware could bypass digital rights checks, dump the disc image, or even stream cracked copies over LAN. Sony isn’t naming names, but the subtext is clear.
Indian PS5 owners will need this update installed before inserting the GTA 6 disc, assuming the 14.22 requirement holds. No regional variation is mentioned in the sources. The firmware rolls out globally, including India, via automatic download or manual update in Settings > System > System Software Update. What’s next?
Rockstar is expected to confirm minimum system requirements, including firmware, in its final pre-launch FAQ, likely by Tuesday, November 5. Until then, the 14.22 update remains mandatory for anyone planning to play GTA 6 on day one. It’s already live. It’s already installing.
