Your Windows 11 24H2 machine just picked up its final routine patch.

Microsoft retired consumer servicing for Windows 11 Home and Pro editions of version 24H2 on Tuesday, meaning those systems will no longer receive monthly security fixes or non-security preview releases. The October 2026 cumulative patch serves as the cutoff point. If you stay on the older build, your desktop or laptop will remain frozen against newly discovered security threats.

Not every 24H2 deployment goes dark immediately. Under Microsoft's standard lifecycle calendar, enterprise and education installations get an extra year of breathing room. Those volume builds retain mainstream servicing through October 12, 2027.

The Path to 26H2

Microsoft wants everyday users moving straight to Windows 11 26H2, otherwise labeled the Windows 11 2026 Update. That release arrived generally in September 2026 as an enablement package, carrying consumer security support that stretches to October 2029.

The migration is rolling out in waves. If your system qualifies and you turned on the setting to fetch updates as soon as they become ready, the upgrade downloads in the background. Because version 26H2 arrives via an enablement package, the final switchover requires just one reboot rather than a protracted, full-image installation.

The cutoff is part of a broader housecleaning across older Windows releases. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 also reached its final day of updates on October 13, and Windows Server 2022 slipped out of mainstream support, though extended support for that server platform runs through October 2031.

Time is also short for lingering corporate deployments on older software. Systems running Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions will lose regular security patches in roughly 30 days. Their consumer counterparts, 23H2 Home and Pro, already lost official support back in November 2025.

Certificate Rotation Looms

Staying behind on expired builds carries a sharper penalty this time around. Microsoft recently warned that unsupported Windows installations will fail to pull future patches entirely once an upcoming Windows Update certificate rotation takes place next year.

Earlier in 2026, Microsoft did show some leniency to consumers still clinging to legacy software by extending its free Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10 home users. But on modern Windows 11 hardware, the company expects consumer machines to stay on a current yearly branch.

The 26H2 rollout will continue expanding over the coming months. Users running 24H2 Home or Pro who want the upgrade immediately can check Windows Update directly in Settings to trigger the download once their hardware clears Microsoft's staging gates.
