Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop Ultra in the US with a $1,000 trade-in offer for MacBook Pro owners — but only if they’re trading in a very recent, high-spec model. The headline figure is real, but it’s not typical. Most Apple users will get far less: $45 for a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro (8GB/256GB), $275 for a 2023 14-inch M3 model (8GB/512GB), and $755 for a 2024 14-inch M4 (16GB/1TB). That last one is the only configuration TechRadar confirmed qualifies for anything close to the top-tier payout. And even then, the final amount depends on Microsoft’s trade-in partner’s assessment, which can downgrade the value after inspection. Buyers can reject the revised offer and get their MacBook back, but no refunds or guarantees are mentioned. The banner on the US Surface Laptop Ultra product page reads “break up with your MacBook”, an overt play for Apple’s pro laptop users. No UK version of the offer was visible at launch. It’s not clear what the Surface Laptop Ultra costs outright. TechRadar doesn’t list its base price, but the trade-in math suggests it starts well above $1,000. The campaign targets a specific audience: Windows-curious creatives and developers currently locked into macOS. But Reddit reaction, per TechRadar, is largely dismissive. And realistically, many MacBook owners would net more selling directly on Swappa or eBay than accepting Microsoft’s valuation. The trade-in program is live now in the US. No global rollout date is given.
