Windows 11 26H2 Accelerated App Launch: Edge faster if already running

Edge launches up to 33% faster — but only if it’s already running. Microsoft’s new Accelerated App Launch is live in Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2.

Windows 11’s new Accelerated App Launch feature cuts Edge startup time by up to 33% — but only when the browser is already running. Microsoft rolled it out quietly on October 28 via KB5127936, an optional cumulative update for Windows 11 25H2, 26H1, and 26H2. Edge version 150 or newer is required.

No toggle, no setting: it just works, if your system meets the criteria. $ The speed gain isn’t about cold boots. It’s about warm launches: opening a new Edge window, clicking a link that triggers Edge, or launching from Start or taskbar while Edge is already active in the background, say, thanks to Startup Boost.

Under heavy multitasking, Microsoft says latency drops as much as one-third. For most users, it’s closer to 15%. $ What changed under the hood? Windows used to spawn a short-lived intermediary process every time you launched Edge, just to check whether an instance was already alive and route the request.

Now, Edge registers itself directly with the OS. Launch requests go straight to the running process. Less overhead. Less delay. $ This isn’t a broad system-wide acceleration.

It doesn’t touch Chrome, Firefox, or Notepad. Not yet. Microsoft has opened the underlying APIs to third-party developers, but access is limited. Apps must apply for permission.

And yes, Microsoft confirmed it’s contributing the core work to Chromium. That means Chrome, Brave, and Vivaldi could adopt it, but only after Chromium lands the changes and those browsers ship them. No timeline given. $ Also in scope: PDF handling inside Edge. Microsoft says it’s exploring accelerated launch for PDFs too, meaning clicking a.pdf file might open faster within Edge, not just launching the browser itself. $ No price.

No regional variation. No rollout delay beyond the update’s availability. It’s in the OS now, for anyone running 25H2, 26H1, or 26H2 with KB5127936 installed and Edge 150+. $ Next step? Wider developer adoption.

If more single-instance apps, messaging clients, media players, IDEs, start registering with Windows this way, the cumulative effect could make Windows 11 feel snappier across common multitasking workflows. But right now, Edge is the only app using it. And it only helps when Edge is already awake.
